New report on CNN that got published recently draws evidence to cell phone usage and possibility of brain tumor. Now the recent report is not something that is already out their in the public domain. This report just draws in more diverse voices stringing in more results. The study claims that a cell phone is emitting microwaves similar to those that get used to cook your food in a microwave. Now the study do acknowledge that the gestation period of this cause and effect to show up is about 34 years and we have only been using cell phones for about 15 years and in essence can’t categorically prove that the cell phone has this kind of effect but again the scenario after 34 years does not inspire confidence either. I like to draw the analogy to Global warming, where the results are not in conclusively but gives pause to the thought that, it is better to be safe then sorry.
Now the good news is that the effect of radiation is inversely related to the distance at which it is held to the head. The radiation effects drops dramatically when using head phones or Bluetooth. Wattage is the measurement of electricity, or power. The more watts a light bulb consumes, the more power it consumes. If you’re using filament bulbs then you may well be using anything from a 40 watt bulb to a 100 watt bulb; even if you’re using halogen bulbs, which are more efficient, you may still be using anything from 25 watts to 50 watts. LED lights are much more efficient, and a 5 watt LED bulb is likely to give you the same amount of brightness as a 35 watt halogen bulb, or a 60 watt filament bulb. Since your bulbs are providing just as much light, but for far less power, it’s worth bearing in mind that whatever kind of LED light you choose, you will be saving money on running costs.

The term lumens is simply another way of talking about the level of brightness. The greater the lumens, the greater the brightness. It’s also helpful to be aware that the level of brightness achieved per watt helps to identify a bulb’s efficiency. So the more lumens per watt, the more efficient a bulb is. But with LED lights it’s not just about lumens or brightness. Standard filament or incandescent bulbs generate light in a complete 360 degree radius, spilling light into every corner. You don’t always want this, especially in places such as kitchens, bathrooms, desks or reading corners. LED bulbs generate a high level of brightness, or lumens, for very little power, or wattage. But they are also focussed lights, meaning that they focus a cone of light at a specific area. Some LED light bulbs have a wide focus, directing light at a broad area, whereas others may create a fairly tight beam which directs light at a smaller, more defined area.

This level of focus, or lighting angle, is important. When you are choosing an LED light it will be important to know how it will be used and where it will be installed. If you are fitting bulbs in a display cabinet, you may require a very tightly focused beam of light directed at a single item on display. For a reading corner, bedside lamp or desk you may need a slightly wider cone of light, and for kitchens or bathrooms, wider still. The advantage is that almost 100% of the light being generated by the LED bulb is directed exactly where you need it, rather than being wasted, diluted and scattered everywhere. Often this means that whereas a 100 watt filament bulb or a 50 watt halogen bulb was needed, a much lower wattage LED bulb is required because all of the light is right where it’s needed. In many kitchens householders have previously installed two or three high wattage bulbs, overlapping them to create a bright work surface area. By using appropriately fitted LED light bulbs it is often possible to reduce 200-300 watts of light down to less than 10 watts. This represents a significant saving on fuel bills, as well as being much kinder to the environment.

Another factor to be aware of are the fittings for bulbs. If you currently have fittings for either halogen or LED light bulbs it will be necessary to identify whether they are for 100-240 volt connections, or 12 volt connections. There are generally two main types of connections - a fairly chunky one, called a GU10, and a thinner, smaller connection known as either an MR16 or a GU5.3. Make sure you know which connection you need. Once you know the connection, have a clear idea where your LED light bulbs will be installed, and what level and focus of light you need, then it’s time to look around at the wide variety of LED lights and fittings available.

Rural areas

In many rural areas the housing density is too low to make construction of a new base station commercially viable. In these cases it is unlikely that the service provider will do anything to improve reception, due to the high cost of erecting a new tower. As a result, the only way to obtain strong cell phone signal in these areas is usually to install a home cellular repeater. In flat rural areas the signal is unlikely to suffer from multipath interference, so will just be heavily attenuated by the distance. In these cases the installation of a cellular repeater will generally massively increase signal strength just due to the amplifier, even a great distance from the broadcast towers.

Building construction material

Some construction materials very rapidly attenuate cell phone signal strength. Older buildings, such as churches, which use lead in their roofing material will very effectively block any signal. Concrete floors are often poured onto a metal pan which completely blocks most radio signals. Some solid foam insulation and some fiberglass insulation used in roofs or exterior walls has foil backing, which can reduce transmittance. Building size

Large buildings, such as warehouses, hospitals and factories, often have no cellular reception further than a few meters from the outside wall. Low signal strength is also often the case in underground areas such as basements and in shops and restaurants located towards the centre of shopping malls. This is caused by both the fact that the signal is attenuated heavily as it enters the building and the interference as the signal is reflected by the objects inside the building. For this reason in these cases an external antenna is usually desirable.

Multipath interference

Even in urban areas which usually have strong cellular signals throughout, there are often dead zones caused by destructive interference of waves which have taken different paths (caused by the signal bouncing off buildings etc.) These usually have an area of a few blocks and will usually only affect one of the two frequency ranges used by cell phones. This is because the different wavelengths of the different frequencies interfere destructively at different points. Directional antennas are very helpful at overcoming this since they can be placed at points of constructive interference and aligned so as not to receive the destructive signal. Diffraction and general attenuation

The longer wavelengths have the advantage of being able to diffract to a greater degree so are less reliant on line of sight to obtain a good signal, but still attenuate significantly. Because the frequencies which cell phones use are too high to reflect off the ionosphere as shortwave radio waves do, cell phone waves cannot travel via the ionosphere.
